100 Happy Days: Day 97 Indian Dolls

Happiness is being immersed in creativity

I was passing through a handicraft store,when this couple caught my attention and took me back to pre-social-media days when all my free time was spent in various handicraft activities including making dolls. Having a creative hobby can liberate us from so many things. I have not made dolls for sometime now, but till today, I have made more than 100 dolls of different culture and costumes. Whenever I make, I am so immersed in the activity that outer world ceases to exist. Right from designing the clothes and jewelry, to getting the expressions closer to reality, the mind is completely occupied around the activity.

Looking at the finished product, there is a sense of achievement. It feels good to stare at your creation of making something from odds and ends. The dolls have life, they talk to you, and they begin to have an identity you can relate to.

Maybe i should make one more soon.

100 Happy Days: Day 96 Surprise Meeting

Happiness is meeting a friend at most unexpected places

I walked into the lobby of a hotel and ask for directions to a particular restaurant I was to dine. While the person was still giving direction, my gaze settled on a friend sitting at the far end of the table. Everything forgotten, I rushed to the table to hug my friend whom I had not met for a long time. 

Happiness is found in most unusual moments. Many times we ruin our happiness by complaining. By bringing the unpleasant past back. It’s the moment that decides our happiness. Meeting her was pure happiness. It was the moment to relish and be glad that her delayed flight (her reason for being at the hotel) and my presence at the hotel (was invited to attend a dinner party) resulted in this happy meeting. Had I not met her I would not have known that she was in Mumbai.

Was I glad? Of course yes…..

100 Happy Days: Day 95 On My Own

Happiness is being your own mentor

I am always surprised when people complain that they are bored. How can one be bored in one’s own company? There is so much to do when you are left on your own, so much freedom, so much space to spread your thoughts.

Being your own mentor is a blessing. There is no contradiction, no wars, just peace in being with your own self. It can be a stroll at the beach, or walk up the hills or simple be confined to the four walls of a house.

As long as there is no interruption to our thoughts, there is bliss.

100 Happy Days: Day 94 A New Canvas Arrives

Happiness is starting a new painting

Met a 90years old artist last week and got inspired by her work. She has some beautiful paintings in oils. I decided to make one too. I asked her if she would help me. She invited me to go to her house. I asked her to sketch for me and give me little guidance. She was willing too. The only problem is to go to Navi Mumbai, which is pretty far from my house. 

Maybe I could do something else? Warli is the painting on my mind. I don’t wish to paint in oils because it takes too much time to complete. I need to finish this in two months. I have decided to paint in acrylic and this time it will Warli paintings.

Morning was spent just sketching the outline. Okay, there is still time.

Happiness is attending regional fun fair

Sindhi New year was on March 30^th, and it was celebrated today at Khar Gymkhana.

It was nice to enjoy the culture, food and people of my community at the fun fair.
