100 Happy Days: Day 14 Winning a Contest

Happiness is ‘Winning a contest’.

Such Joy in getting appreciation for the work we do. Times literary carnival was held in the month of December 2013 and I was glad that it happened in my Suburb of Bandra. I enjoyed 3-day Litfest attending different talk shows of the famous writers and got inspired to write. The carnival didn’t end just there, after the event, there were many contests held on their FB page. I submitted my feedback on the event and I am happy to be the winner of contest ‘Most Enjoyable Event’

100 Happy Days: Day 13 Chopping Veggies

Happiness is ‘Chopping vegetables the way you wish’.

Chopping Vegetables is a skill and an enjoyable activity. I can never understand why people depend on helpers to do this task. Some even dump their veggies into the food processor to get the quick results. Okay, I agree, I do that too sometimes. But chopping vegetables is an art. The act of slicing through the soft flesh with sharp knife, and getting the sweet fragrance of the veggies is a pure joy.

There are different ways to chop vegetables. When you wish to make Chinese fried rice, veggies should be chopped very fine and slant wise. When cooking for noodles, it needs to be chopped lengthwise. For biryani it is in big square pieces, and in curry, you can just dump it whole after slicing off the ends.

With carving knife, we can give good shapes and make artistic visual presentations on salads. There is art everywhere that only chef understands. Chopping veggies is the extension of cooking because only the chef knows what taste will emerge from the veggies chopped in a certain way. If done wrong, there are chances of veggies half cooked or overcooked and soggy.

Chopping veggies is an art that I love as much as the art of cooking itself.

100 Happy Days: Day 12 Heritage Buildings

Happiness is ‘Enjoying the artistic aspect of heritage architecture’.

Mumbai has changed its skyline over the years. Old buildings have been under the hammer of redevelopment. High rise buildings with swimming pool, Gym and walking path in the open space is a norm today. Although there is artistic architecture in some of the new buildings too, it cannot compete with the heritage buildings that were built 100 years ago. They have a beauty of their own. Sometimes I go to the narrow lanes in the suburbs of Bandra to admire those petit, cute, one story buildings that have an artistic façade.

That is a feast to my eyes.

100 Happy Days: Day 11 Gift Hamper

Happiness is ‘Rip opening a gift hamper’.

Gift hamper has its own charm. It doesn’t matter what is inside the basket, you may not even relish all the goodies behind the packing but the stretched plastic covering, and the handcrafted basket laced with pretty ribbons attracts attention. You try to peep through the plastic covering for visual pleasure. You rip open to expose the surprise.

100 Happy Days: Day 10: Subtitled Films

Happiness is ‘Understanding the film because there are subtitles’.

The film looked good on TV promos and on street hoardings. There is good poetry in the film to enjoy too. Some humor and artistic performance of the stars makes the film bearable. The language used in the film is regional Urdu. Although some of the dialogues were very gross, but at least I understood their silly jokes, and cursed them under my breath.

Numerous plots, and many surprises, I would not have understood a word in the film Dedh Ishkiya had there been no subtitle.
