100 Happy Days: Day 31 Painless Day.

Happiness is ‘experiencing relief after many days of pain’.

My lane has been under construction since last three months. They repaired the water pipes, made new footpaths on either side of road and tarred the road. It is very unsafe to walk, even for abled person. Besides dust and stones, the road is uneven. Everyday, neighbors complained of injuries, some of foot sprains and some of knee pain. I was careful and avoided going out but then, how long can one be confined at home?

Work has to be done, life cannot come to standstill, and one must venture out. I dared. And so, I fell too on my knees on a slippery footpath. The pain was intense. Homebound, I have suffered for 20 days.

Pain is the cross one must carry alone. We can share happiness, our moments of joy but pain has no company. Visitors came to cheer me up but they could never reduce my pain. I spend many sleepless nights fighting with pain.

Our body has an amazing power of healing itself. All we need is to take proper rest and let it heal.

Today, after more than 20 days, I have experience a relief. It feels good to be painless again…..

100 Happy Days: Day 30 Sunday is a special Day.

Happiness is ‘reserving Sundays for family gapshup’.

Sunday is the day of rest; it is a day to spend quality time with close family members. It could be at home or at the social club or even at the beach.

The idea is to maintain a bond amongst the family members.

This has been a custom in my family since many years. During my growing up years, Mom insisted that there be no appointment with friends for any movie or outings, Sunday to be reserved for family get together.  Every Sunday, we met, aunts, uncles and cousins, together we would spend day eating, chatting, joking, playing board games, we even fought sometimes, but love was the common string that tied us all.

All my cousins are close to me and I thank my elders for creating such a bond.

And I also thank them for this tradition of spending Sundays with close knit family, the custom which is observed till date. I don't make any appointments with friends for any event, if that can be helped.

Sunday is a family day.

100 Happy Days: Day 29 Kullard Chai.

Happiness is ‘Sipping Kullard Chai on cold winter evenings’.

I remember those days when I used to make trips to Rajasthan by train. Somewhere at the stations, on cold winter early mornings; we used to drink hot tea in kullard (clay cups). It had its unique taste, maybe it was the clay or was it spices, I am not sure, but the memory of that tea lingered on for days.

That memory came alive during my recent trip to Jaipur. At the wedding celebration, the chaiwallah stood there, dressed up in traditional ethnic clothes, in the open lawn; with pot of tea steaming over the bed of coals and it was served to all in clay cups.

Was the taste same?

I am not sure. But the idea of having tea in clay cups on cold winter evenings did stir up the magical emotions.

One more reason to believe that going to Jaipur to experience and revive my childhood memories was all worth it.

100HappyDays Day 28 - Tribal Music

Happiness is listening to tribal music

The tribal music in Rajasthan is very soothing. During my trip to Jaipur this week, I came across the women who sing from door to door.

The family wedding celebrations were on, all the women were busy tattooing the henna on their hands and feet. Normally there are dances and singing by family members during these occasions. But the ceremony had just started, we were all spread out in the big lawn and all we could hear were the murmurs of the private conversations and soft breeze in the air.

Suddenly we heard the loud beating of the drums. At the gate were two women, one playing the drums while other woman singing folk music. It was pleasant to the ear. I went forward to click their pictures and the singer began to dance as well, her long skirt spread out like a balloon as she twirled round and round.

It was a happiest moment to see them perform so spontaneously.
