100 Happy Days: Day 10: Subtitled Films

Happiness is ‘Understanding the film because there are subtitles’.

The film looked good on TV promos and on street hoardings. There is good poetry in the film to enjoy too. Some humor and artistic performance of the stars makes the film bearable. The language used in the film is regional Urdu. Although some of the dialogues were very gross, but at least I understood their silly jokes, and cursed them under my breath.

Numerous plots, and many surprises, I would not have understood a word in the film Dedh Ishkiya had there been no subtitle.

100 Happy Days: Day 9 Mystic Music

Happiness is listening to mystic lyrics by the seaside.

Mohko kahah dundey rey bandhe
meh toh tere paas, rey”

Kabir says, don’t search me anywhere, I am within you, I reside in your faith.

Such lovely words, such lovely music..an evening well spent.

There is some magic in Kabir lyrics which takes you to another world.

I was very happy to attend this Kabir festival at Amphitheatre at Carter road. The cool sea breeze, sun setting on the horizon, we sat wrapped up in shawls listening to live foot tapping music.

100 Happy Days: Day 8 Nacho Delight

Happiness means sharing recipes

S loves to make exotic snacks. The normal cooking may not interest her (that is left to an ordinary cook to prepare it) but when it comes to creativity, S can put her sleeve up and work out her masterpiece.

Like an artists, she carefully places nacho chips in a decorative plate. Covers the chips with Dorito salsa, puts the blob of baked kidney beans then squeezes out the Mexican cheese. With spoonful of olives and jalapenos to add to its taste, she finishes it with sour cream.

“It’s my self created recipe” she beams proudly at her creation, happy at last.

100 Happy Days: Day 7 Walking On The Snow

Happiness is watching my family happy.

My cousins are having a very good time in Chicago. They had invited me this winter to celebrate white Christmas and New Year, but I failed to get US visa. No regrets, I hate winter because I cannot take too much cold.

But thanks to Face Time, I have connected several times on line to enjoy a chat with them in their kitchen. While they cook meals, we chat and joke, they show me the view outside their window, thick layers of white snow sitting in their lawn. Windowpane covered with needles of icicles. There is no clear path leading to the road. I shudder seeing the snow, I can feel the cold, well..visually, but they console, talking about the warmth inside their house, inside the car, inside the malls.

“Everywhere there is heater, why you worry?”

“But how do you go out?” I ask. They say it’s very adventurous in the snow.

They send me pictures to prove their point.

100 Happy Days: Day 6 - At The Cinema

Today I shed tears. I could not help it; they rolled down, unattended, staining my cheeks. Luckily nobody noticed. It was dark. I was in a cinema hall watching the film ‘Club 60’. Yes! I do cry in movies especially if the film moves me emotionally.

Club 60’ is a story of a couple that grieves over the loss of their young son. I cried when wife confronts her husband’s raging grief, disclosing her reasons for being stronger. It is difficult to deal with your own grief if you have to sympathize with others. One has to be strong to help other emerge out of depression.

Sarika and Farookh Sheikh’s excellent performance is worth a mention.

One idea is clear. Happiness and pain are two sides of a coin. How one deals with it differs from person to person. Some scars are so deep that they can drown you down into depression zone, leading to self-destruction. Its only when we share the pain or understand the reality, can one find happiness.

I am glad I was able to watch this film in PVR, undisturbed and undistracted.

The beautiful lyrics on ‘happiness’ are very refreshing: “I have found you after losing you; once again my shadow walks with me.”

Sehami Huyi Jee Roshani  /  Lamhein Bujhe Huye / Kone Mein The Padein Kahin / Sapne Mere Huye / Palko Mein Aaj Phir Se / Ek Khaab Sajaya Hain / Phir Se Mere Saath Mera Saaya Hain / Khokar Maine Aaj Tumhein Paaya Hain
